Trail Voices
Ultra-runners who won't call themselves ultra-runners. Research that can't quite catch its subject. Twenty years, fifteen countries, one drinking club with a running problem. Welcome to the messier side of what moves us: one photo, one voice, different meanings at a time.
Trail Voices starts from a simple assumption: if we want to understand running, we should listen to runners.
What Makes a Runner, a Runner?
What is it that drives a runner, motivates them, moves them one step after another? Is it a mile, five kilometers, a marathon, or something beyond? These are questions we may never fully answer or we'll arrive at very different ones each time we ask. For research purposes, for anyone trying to pin down the phenomenon of "running", these are flags in need of clearing. But can we really clear them?
One Question. One Picture. Many Answers.
Every Trail Voices conversation begins with the same invitation:
"Paint me the perfect trail run, or bring a picture and talk me through it."
What follows is never the same
For one runner, trail running is a mountain summit. For another, a quiet forest path, a shared adventure, or a place to think. The photographs below are not intended to define trail running. They are fragments of how different people understand it.
One question. Many answers. One voice at a time.
